Paddu or Rice appe is a common breakfast item in Karnataka. They are small round crispy balls which are made up of rice and dal and are quite healthy and easy to prepare.
Ingredients
Urad Dal: ½ cup
Rice: 1 and ½ cup
Chana Dal: ¼ cup
Green Chillies: 4
Ginger: 1 inch piece
Oil: As required for making appe
Salt: to taste
Instructions
Soak the chana dal and urad dal in sufficient water for 7-8 hours. Soak rice separately in sufficient water for 7-8 hours.
Grind the dals, green chillies and ginger to smooth paste. Grind rice to smooth paste. Mix the ground dals and rice together.
Allow the batter to ferment for 8-9 hours or overnight.
Add salt and mix well.
Heat an appe pan. Put 2-3 drops of oil in every slot of the appe pan.
Put 1 tbsp of batter in each slot. Close and let cook till golden brown on one side.
Flip over and let cook till golden brown on the other side.
Serve with coriander chutney.
