Below is a step by step procedure with pictures for making these healthy and crunchy wheat chocolate chip cookies
Makes : 15 cookies
Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 10 minutes
Ingredients:
Sugar : 1/2 cup
Brown sugar : 1/2 cup
Unsalted Butter : 1/2 cup (softened)
Oil : 2 tbsp
Vanilla essence : 3/4th tsp
Egg :1
Whole Wheat Flour : 1.5 cups
Baking Soda : 1 tsp
Chocolate Chips : 1/3rd cup
Salt : a pinch
Method of Preparation:
- Add the sugars, Butter, Oil, Vanilla Essence in a large bowl and mix.
- Add the egg and mix well.
- Add in the wheat flour, baking soda and salt and mix till you get a dough.
- Add in the chocolate chips to the dough.
- Divide the dough into 15 circular portions. Gently flatten each portion with your palm.
- Preheat oven to 190 deg cel and bake for 10 min. Refer note below.
- Remove the cookies from the oven, they will be soft, especially the centers – and that is fine as they will harden later. Cool on a wire rack.
Note : The baking time may differ based on the size of the oven and the number of cookies you are baking in one batch. I keep just 5-6 cookies in each batch and they get done in 10 min. If your oven is larger and you are putting in more cookies, you may need to keep it for a few minutes more.

Hi deepa.. Nice recipe.. Couple of questions.. Can I substitute butter with olive oil? Also any substitute for brown sugar? Thanks in advance.
By the way I am yet to try paav..
Thanks Ruchi
I have not really used olive oil for baking. For certain recipes I have substituted butter with vegetable oil and that doesn’t interfere much with the end result. Certain olive oils have a strong smell which may affect the final result.
Brown sugar can be substituted by regular white sugar. I haven’t really tried it for this recipe, but I don’t think regular sugar will be a problem. It may slightly reduce the crunchiness effect which the molasses in the brown sugar is supposed to bring.

Hi ,like ur blog very much.I have a question can egg be skipped or sustitute with aytthing else.
Hi Hina,
Glad you like our blog. ?
Coming to your query, well eggs supposedly can be substituted with flax seeds, the proportion being – 1 tbsp of ground flax seeds mixed in 3 tbsp of water.. However we haven’t tried it out as yet. Will definitely try it sometime soon and let you know. ?

What would be replacement for egg ?
Hi
Egg can be substituted with a number of ingredients like ripe bananas(1/2), peanut butter(3 tbsp) or flax seeds(1tbsp ground flax seeds + 3 tbsp water). However we haven’t tried it out as yet. Have been wanting to try the flax seeds option for a while. Will keep you posted.

Hi love your whole wheat Recipe wanted to know if sugar can be substituted with a healthier option like powdered jaggery ,will it alter the taste too much . Thanks
Hi Nidhi
Replacing sugar with jaggery will alter the taste a little, but if you are used to jaggery based sweets i don’t think it should be a problem. ?
We have a jaggery based cookie on our site – just in case you haven’t noticed that recipe – http://www.yourhungerstop.com/healthy-whole-wheat-flour-cookies/
Happy baking!
Hi resha.. Superb blog.. Learning a lot of amazing stuff.. Tried these cookies.. They turned out really nice.. Just 1 thing.. The chocolate chips became very hard.. Don’t they melt when baked?
N a suggestion.. Y don’t u write a book?
N one more suggestion, can u post some goan chavath sweet recipes..
Hey Meeta,
Thank you so much. Glad you like our site ? And yeah these wheat chocolate chip cookies are my favorite too ?
Regarding the chocolate chips, well they will not melt when baked. Chocolate chips will only tend to soften as the cookie bakes but most likely it should retain its shape. And once the cookie hardens( after being out of oven and cooled) The chocolate chip become hard again… but not very hard as such. Which brand of chocolate chips did you use? Maybe that matters, but m not too sure as I haven’t tried with different ones. ?
Yes, will definitely try to post goan chavath recipes soon ?
Thanks a lot for the suggestion regarding the book. Maybe sometime later ?
Best Regards ?

Hi,
I tried your recipe. It tasty fine but somehow its doesn’t seemed to be cooked from the inside. I kept it in the oven for 15 mins and then pulled it out- as suggested. Earlier they were very soft but after few mins of room temp, the texture became good but the inside is not fully cooked. What wrong am I doing?
Thanks
Hey Anu
Firstly, apologies for a delayed response.
Regarding the cookies, are you sure the temperature is set correctly? Also what is the size of your oven? Mine is a very small one and I hardly keep 4-5 cookies at one time. Basically you can take the cookies out of the oven once you start getting the beautiful cookie aroma and when they appear cracked. The top should feel slightly firm to touch. Also try flattening them a bit more next time, so that they are evenly cooked from inside as well.
Hope this helps.
