Appe are small crispy round balls which are very popular in South Indian cuisine, served mostly for breakfast or as a snack. They can be made in several different ways. This recipe is for sweet Appe made with whole wheat flour, jaggery and milk. A very complete meal in itself…isn’t it? Wheat flour provides carbohydrates, jaggery is a rich source of iron and milk provides calcium and vitamin D. Sometimes I even mash bananas and add them to the batter, for additional health benefits.
Now you must be wondering why the name Appe cake? Well, the first time I made them for my toddler, she just loved them and said “mamma, it tastes just like cake.” And she was the one who named it appe cake. It is also an excellent tiffin box snack for kids. So try it out…I am sure your kid would like it too.
