Varan is a preparation of dal without onion and garlic. It is usually eaten with rice and tastes best with a dash of ghee.
Ingredients
  • Grated coconut: 4 tbsps
  • Toor Dal: ½ cup
  • Cumin seeds: ¼ tsp
  • Asafoetida (Hing): Pinch
  • Turmeric powder: ½ tsp
  • Sugar: Pinch
  • Salt: ¾ tsp
Instructions
  1. Soak the toor dal in 1.5 cups of water for around ½ hour and cook it in a pressure cooker (3-4 whistles)
  2. Grind together the coconut, cumin seeds and asafoetida.
  3. Mix together the toor dal and the ground mixture.
  4. To this, add salt, turmeric powder and sugar. Close lid and bring to boil.
