Achari Chicken is a spicy chicken recipe where the main flavor is brought by fenugreek and mustard seeds. Achari comes from the word Achar- which means pickle. So this is basically a spicy and hot preparation. In fact you can increase the chilli powder a little more if you are used to more spicy curries. ? Typically making pickles or pickle based recipes are known to be complicated and time consuming, however this one is fairly simple. Ingredients:
Chicken : 750 gms
Kashmiri Red Chillies : 4-5 (roughly broken)
Mustard Seeds : 1 tsp
Fenugreek Seeds : 1/4 tsp
Chilli Powder : 1/2 tsp
Turmeric Powder : 1/2 tsp
Curds : 2 tbsp
Tomato : 2 large
Onion : 2 Large
Oil : 4 tsp
Method of Preparation:
- In a small skillet, heat 1 tsp oil. Add the chillies, Mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds and lightly fry for a minute. Remove from flame once the mustard seeds just begin to splutter. Cool and grind this to a fine powder. This will give a very nice smell.
- Apply half of this spice powder, chilli powder, turmeric powder, curds and little salt evenly to the chicken pieces and keep aside. Let it sit in the marinate for around 30 minutes.
- In another skillet heat 3 tsp oil. Add the onion and fry till it turns soft. Add tomatoes and fry for 3-4 minutes till the tomatoes turn soft.
- Remove half this onion tomato mixture and grind to a fine paste. Keep this onion tomato paste aside.
- Add the chicken pieces to the onion tomato mixture in the skillet. Add the remaining spice powder. Cover and let it cook for some time.
- Open the lid and turn the chicken pieces. Add the onion tomato paste, around 1/2 cup water, salt (Remember you have already added salt while marinating the chicken) and cook uncovered for 4-5 minutes. Your delicious Achari Chicken is ready. Serve with lemon wedges by the side.
