We have heard a very popular saying about apples – ‘An apple a day keeps a doctor at bay’. Here is slight modification to it – ‘Make some apple crumble today, and melt your loved ones heart away’ ? Too cheesy huh! Well the line maybe but the dessert is not. Its a beautiful combination of apples, with a wheat flour and rolled oats topping. ? This is the perfect kind of dessert that can be served warm on a cold evening. Or you can choose to serve it with a dollop of vanilla ice cream and just enjoy seeing your loved ones relish it. ?
The Apple Crumble is a good option to make when you have guests over as it can be made in advance and just warmed a little just before serving.
If you like fruit based desserts, you may also want to try Mango Parfait, Strawberry Phirni or a cheesy Mango CheeseCake. If you are pressed for time and want some no-cook desserts, then Serradura (Sawdust Pudding) is a great option.
Below are the simple steps for making this attractive Apple Crumb. You can increase of decrease the amount of sugar both in the filling and the topping. I think this recipe will taste best with the crunchy apple variety.
Serves : 2-3
Preparation Time: 5 minutes
Cooking Time: 35 minutes
Ingredients:
For the filling :
Apple : 1 (Large) (Peeled, de-seeded and coarsely chopped) Preferably crunchy variety
Brown Sugar : 2 tbsp
Butter : 2 tbsp (softened)
Vinegar : 3/4th tbsp (or you can use lemon juice)
Cinnamon : a pinch (optional)
For the Topping:
Rolled Oats : 2 tbsp
Whole Wheat Flour : 2 tbsp
Brown Sugar : 1.5 tbsp
Butter : 2 tbsp
Method of Preparation:
- Add all the ingredients mentioned for filling in a bowl and mix well, to ensure that the apple pieces are well coated with the butter and sugar.
- In another bowl, mix the ingredients mentioned for topping. You can mix it with your fingers till it roughly resembles bread crumbs.
- Butter a oven safe dish and add the apple filling to it. Spread the topping mix evenly on it. (You can spread a teaspoon of brown sugar on the topping if you love the look of the brown crystals like i do.)
- Bake in a preheated oven at 170 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes. Basically till the crust appears golden-brown and the apple mix has started bubbling.
- Serve warm with a dollop of vanilla ice cream. You could garnish it with some honey or caramel sauce.
