Mutter Paneer is a preparation of green peas (Mutter) and Cottage Cheese (Paneer) in a tangy onion tomato based gravy. Mutter Paneer is one of the most common dishes found on Indian restaurant menus especially those catering to North Indian food (Some other regular ones being Chana Masala, Dal Bukhara, Mutter Palak).
The Mutter Paneer recipe described here is a simple one and its been a savior for me when I have some vegetarian guest for dinner. And it has always been loved by all ?
Mutter Paneer recipe with step by step pictures –
Serves: 3
Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 15 minutes
Ingredients:
Paneer (Cottage Cheese) : 200 gms (cut into bite-size cubes)
Mutter : 1/2 cup
Onion : 1 large (roughly chopped)
Tomato: 1 large (roughly chopped)
Ginger : 1 inch
Garlic : 6-7 cloves
Oil : 3 tbsp
Cumin Seeds (Jeera) : 1 tsp
Kashmiri Red Chilli : 1
Chilli Powder : 1/2 tsp
Garam Masala : 1/2 tsp
Turmeric Powder : 1/2 spoon
Salt : as per taste
Method of Preparation:
- Heat one 2 tbsp oil in a skillet and add the paneer cubes and 1/4 tsp turmeric powder. Fry for 2-3 minutes on low- medium flame. Remove paneer from the skillet and keep aside. If there is any oil left in skillet, let it remain as we can use it in later steps. Be careful not to fry paneer for long as it tends to get hard.
- Grind together onion, tomato, ginger and garlic to a fine paste and keep aside.
- Add one tbsp oil to the same skillet, add cumin seeds and roughly torn Kashmiri Chilli.
- Once the cumin seeds start spluttering add the onion tomato paste.
- Add Chilli powder, turmeric powder, Garam masala powder, salt and mix well. Cook for a while till oil separates.
- Add the fried Paneer and Mutter and mix well and cook for another 3-4 minutes.
- Garnish with coriander and serve hot with rotis.
